Study & Action for Palestine

from ceasefire to liberation ... what would it take?

Online Course & Learning Community
held and hosted by White Awake

FACILITATORS: Eleanor Hancock and Chris Crass | WITH GUEST TEACHERS: Huwaida Arraf, Rabbi Alissa Wise, Sumaya Awad, Kohenet Jen Kiok and Andrew Kadi

“Decolonization is not only a moral imperative, it is a necessity for life on this planet.” - Nick Estes

“There are racist arguments that the Palestinians are incapable of living in peace with Jews, but history belies this. Palestinians want peace, and that means ending the occupation, ending racist discrimination against Palestinians inside the 1949 ceasefire lines, and ending the forced exile of refugees who want to return and live in peace with their neighbors. That is the key to peace.” - Ali Abunimah

“I am you. I am your past. And by killing me, you kill you.” - Refaat Alareer

Study & Action for Palestine is an online course and a learning community for anyone who is committed to a Free Palestine and the well-being of all people, everywhere. The program consists of extensive study materials, six live sessions (recorded and open/available to anyone who registers) and an ongoing focus on action - both what participants are doing or can be doing right now, as well as how we can deepen our engagement in specific, strategic struggles and commit ourselves to the long haul. We are honored to be joined by an amazing roster of guest teachers, and we encourage participants to join the program with others they know.

Designed to be a community of support for study and taking meaningful action, this course will focus on the following themes:
  • Historic and international context for the current wave of genocidal violence against Palestinians under Israeli occupation
  • Historic Palestine, Palestinian struggles for self-determination, and Palestinian leadership in liberatory movements
  • Antisemitism, the weaponization of Jewish trauma, and Jewish leadership in liberatory movements
  • Settler colonialism, Zionism, capitalism, imperialism, and the strong ties between the United States & Israel
  • Avenues for engagement, including Boycott, Divestment & Sanctions, Palestinian & Jewish led organizing, and international solidarity
White Awake is an organization that specializes in working with white people. We are based in the United States, and our work is anti-racist, anti-capitalist, anti-imperial, and anti-colonial. We focus on developing class consciousness, understanding racism as a divide and control strategy, and breaking the alignment between everyday white people and the capitalist, ruling class.

The question “What would it take?” is central to our work. What would to take … to dismantle white supremacy, to eliminate racism, to co-create a world where everyone thrives? Applying this question to the current escalation in the ongoing crisis of settler-colonialism in Gaza is the starting point for the work we will be doing together in this program.

Course facilitators:

ELEANOR HANCOCK has built White Awake from a small website to an organization of national significance. As founder and director of the organization, Eleanor holds a strong vision for White Awake's work, and has built a supportive team of leadership to guide it. Her leadership grows out of years of experience as an activist, academic, artist, educator, and mother of a biracial child. For more on how Eleanor frames her work, you can listen to this interview on Upstream Podcast.
CHRIS CRASS is one of the leading voices in the U.S. calling for and supporting white people to work for racial justice. He works with community groups, schools and faith communities to develop leadership and momentum for social justice action. He was a founder of the anti-racist movement building center, the Catalyst Project, and helped launch the national white anti-racist network, Showing Up for Racial Justice. He is the author of Towards Collective Liberation and Towards the “Other America”
~ a note on antisemitism & Palestinian liberation ~

White Awake rejects the idea that criticizing Zionism or the Israeli state is inherently antisemitic, and we reject the lie that liberation for Palestinians is synonymous with genocide or oppression of Israeli's or Jews at large. We purport as a concept and a reality that occupation, ethnic cleansing, genocide and apartheid do not lead to the safety or wellbeing of anyone. White Awake promotes a vision of multiracial, multiethnic, multicultural solidarity, peace, and justice that ensures everyone can lead a well resourced & dignified life.

This course is actively supported by White Awake Advisory Council Members:

Sometimes we are asked "why do you charge for your work?"

White Awake focuses on education. We promote a common understanding of capitalism as a driving force behind exploitation and oppression across the globe, and we shed light on the ways in which white supremacy perpetuates capitalism by operating as a strategy of division & control. Participants in our educational programs are encouraged to challenge the legacy of white supremacy they have inherited, demystify the economic system at its root, and join with others to build a life affirming and just society.

White Awake and our instructors support a transition away from capitalism, imperialism and white supremacy; we support reparations to historically targeted groups, communities and Peoples; and we make our work available to all regardless of financial means.

We believe the work that we do is significant, and we want to do it well. To this end, we charge a modest fee for our online programs, and solicit donations from participants and supporters, in order to meet our financial needs. This allows White Awake staff and instructors to focus their time and energy on the educational work this project promotes, for the benefit of all.
